Bermuda Sunlight Requirements

Lawn HQ Team·3 min read·

RULE #1: Bermuda needs 8 hours of FULL sun per day. No truly shade-tolerant Bermuda variety exists. Shaded areas are ALWAYS weaker — fertilizer will NOT fix this. Solutions: lift the canopy by trimming trees up very high to reduce shadow, cut the tree down (last resort), or allow shaded areas to grow slightly taller (marginal help).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can any bermuda variety grow in shade?

No. Despite marketing claims, no bermuda variety is truly shade-tolerant. Some improved varieties tolerate light shade slightly better, but all bermuda needs at least 8 hours of direct sunlight.

What can I do about shaded areas in my bermuda lawn?

Options include trimming trees to raise the canopy and reduce shadow, allowing shaded areas to grow slightly taller for marginal improvement, or accepting that shaded areas will always be thinner. Consider shade-tolerant groundcover for deep shade.

Will extra fertilizer help bermuda in the shade?

No. Fertilizer will not compensate for insufficient sunlight. Over-fertilizing shaded bermuda actually makes the problem worse by promoting weak, leggy growth that is more susceptible to disease.
