Winterizing Cool Season Lawns

Lawn HQ Team·3 min read·

If you've followed the program (16-4-8 or 16-0-8 through the year), you probably don't need to winterize. Nutrients are still in the soil. Potassium enhances cold tolerance but only supplement if soil test shows LOW potassium. Rate: 1 lb potash per 1,000 sqft. Sandy soils with excessive rainfall may need extra.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is winterizer fertilizer?

Winterizer is a fall fertilizer application, usually high in potassium, applied in late fall before the ground freezes. It helps grass store energy in roots for winter survival and strong spring green-up.

When should I apply winterizer?

Apply after the last mowing of the season but before the ground freezes, typically in November for most cool-season zones. The grass should still be green and able to absorb nutrients.

Is winterizer always necessary?

Not always. If you already applied a fall fertilizer in September or October, an additional winterizer may be unnecessary. Over-fertilizing in fall can actually promote snow mold disease.
