Bermuda Clippings, Dethatching & Rolling
Always return clippings when cutting frequently. Thatch layer holds moisture — only dethatch if exceeds 1/2". Exception: bag/rake after hard cuts. Excess clipping PILES will kill Bermuda and cause fungus. DO NOT use prong-type dethatchers on Bermuda — runner-growing grasses are damaged by prong dethatching. Use a BLADED dethatcher (Sun Joe AJ801E) or DirtBooster + microbe booster spray. Rolling is generally NOT recommended.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I dethatch bermuda?
Bermuda is a prolific thatch producer. Check thatch depth annually and dethatch when it exceeds half an inch. Highly maintained bermuda lawns may need dethatching every 1-2 years.
When is the best time to dethatch bermuda?
Dethatch bermuda in late spring to early summer when the grass is actively growing and can recover quickly. Never dethatch during dormancy or stress periods.
Does lawn rolling help bermuda?
Light rolling after topdressing or leveling can smooth the surface, but heavy rolling compacts soil. Only roll when necessary for leveling purposes, not as routine maintenance.
