Bermuda Lawn Leveling
Use leveling mix: 70% sand + 30% organic matter. Clean sand is acceptable. ONLY during growing season (dormant season = washed away). Scalp grass to ground first — leveling the GROUND not the grass. Multiple treatments needed for truly level lawn. For large yards with massive ruts: invest in a reel mower + off-season rolling. 1/4" to 1/2" of leveling sand won't fix 2-3" ruts.
Frequently Asked Questions
What material should I use to level bermuda?
Use clean, washed masonry sand or a sand-compost blend for leveling. Avoid play sand or fill dirt. The material should match your existing soil texture as closely as possible.
How much sand can I apply at once?
Apply no more than half an inch of sand at a time. Bermuda can grow through thin layers, but burying it too deep will smother and kill the grass. Multiple light applications over several weeks are safer.
When should I level my bermuda lawn?
Level during peak growing season in late spring to mid-summer when bermuda is growing aggressively and can recover quickly through the sand layer. Never level during dormancy.
How many times do I need to level?
Most bumpy lawns require 2-3 leveling sessions over the course of one or two growing seasons. Be patient and apply thin layers each time to avoid smothering the grass.
