Pest & Disease Management

Lawn HQ Team·3 min read·

Two most common pests: White grubs (eat roots, cause medium to large brown patches, come from beetles) and Armyworms (eat grass blades, cause surface damage, come from moth eggs). Treatment schedule: late spring and late summer/early fall. Primary product is Duocide Granules. For fungal disease, apply granular fungicide (Prophesy) preventatively in spring as weather warms. Fungus usually appears during slower growth / summer stress months.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I have grubs?

Pull back a section of turf in a damaged area. If it peels up like carpet and you find white C-shaped larvae underneath, you have grubs. More than 5-10 grubs per square foot warrants treatment.

When should I apply grub preventative?

Apply a preventative like chlorantraniliprole in late spring before eggs hatch. Curative treatments with trichlorfon work in late summer and early fall when grubs are small and actively feeding near the surface.

How do I identify armyworm damage?

Armyworms create rapidly expanding brown patches that look like the lawn was scalped. They feed at night and hide during the day. A soap flush test brings them to the surface for confirmation.

Can I prevent pest problems proactively?

Yes. A healthy, properly fertilized lawn is the best defense. Preventative insecticide applications in early summer protect against grubs. Monitor for signs of damage and act quickly when spotted.
