Zoysia Aeration Guide

Lawn HQ Team·3 min read·

Core aerate zoysia in late spring to early summer when actively growing — soil temps should be 70°F+ consistently. Use a CORE-PULLING aerator only, not spike aerators. Core aeration relieves soil compaction, improves water infiltration, and helps break down the thatch layer. Pull cores 2-3 inches deep, spaced 4-6 inches apart. Leave cores on the surface to decompose — they return nutrients and help inoculate the thatch layer with soil microbes. Great time to apply HUMICHAR or topdress with sand/compost after aeration. Do NOT aerate during dormancy or early green-up — zoysia recovers too slowly to justify off-season aeration. Combine with dethatching for maximum effect, but expect a rough-looking lawn for 4-6 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I aerate zoysia?

Aerate in late spring to early summer when soil temps are consistently above 70°F and zoysia is actively growing. This gives it the full growing season to recover.

Should I pick up the plugs after aerating?

You can leave them to break down naturally, which returns organic matter to the soil. Or pick them up for a cleaner look. Either approach works with zoysia.

How often should I aerate zoysia?

Annually for most lawns, especially those with clay soil or heavy foot traffic. Sandy soils may only need aeration every 2-3 years.
