Zoysia Dethatching Guide

Lawn HQ Team·3 min read·

Thatch management is the MOST critical maintenance task for zoysia. Zoysia produces thatch faster than almost any other warm-season grass due to its dense stolons and rhizomes. When thatch exceeds 1/2 inch, water and fertilizer cannot reach roots, and disease pressure skyrockets. Dethatch annually in late spring to early summer when zoysia is actively growing and can recover. Use a BLADED dethatcher (like Sun Joe AJ801E) — NEVER use a prong-type dethatcher on runner-growing grasses, as it rips out stolons. Verticutting (vertical mowing) is the professional approach for severe thatch. After dethatching, apply fertilizer and water heavily to promote recovery. Expect 3-4 weeks for full recovery due to zoysia's slow growth rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I dethatch zoysia?

Annually is recommended for most zoysia lawns. Zoysia is one of the heaviest thatch producers among warm-season grasses due to its dense stolons and rhizomes.

When is the best time to dethatch zoysia?

Late spring to early summer when zoysia is actively growing and can recover. Never dethatch during dormancy or early green-up — recovery will be extremely slow.

What type of dethatcher should I use on zoysia?

Use a bladed/flail dethatcher only. Never use a prong-type dethatcher on zoysia — prongs tear stolons and rhizomes. A Sun Joe bladed dethatcher works well for home lawns.
